Effects on Mechanisms of Neovascularization
Effect of low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic field therapy on mechanisms of neovascularization was tested on an animal model with 30 Hz frequency and 5 mT intensity and findings published in 2015 (Li et al.).
This study not only looked at whether pulsed magnetic therapy would improve the formation of new blood vessels, but also further studied related fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms.
After two weeks of everyday applications, pulsed electromagnetic fields effectively increased levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), which resulted in an overall improvement in the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis).
The results of this study clearly demonstrated that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy significantly accelerates healing, reduces expansion of dead tissue (gangrene) and enhances formation of new blood vessels (neovascularization).
Pulsed magnetic therapy is thus suitable for treatment of critical limb ischemia.
