Managing Recurrent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Managing recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome through low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy of 30-Hz frequency and 2-mT intensity was attempted in New York by the research team of M. I. Weintraub (2005).
A pinched median nerve in the area of the carpal tunnel is the most common cause of touch and movement disorders of hands. Assuming that the low-frequency pulsed magnetic field is able to positively affect the neurons in the body, the research team tried to alleviate neuropathic pain in 35 patients suffering from chronic carpal tunnel syndrome in the study .
They all underwent 9-day pulsed magnetic therapy with daily applications lasting one hour. Efficacy of treatment was evaluated after the treatment and then after another 30 days.
After the therapy, neuropathic pain decreased on average by 23% and after 30 days there was even 37% improvement recorded. Moreover, pulsed magnetic therapy also had much better – up to 67% – effect on the vitality of patients.
In short, the results show how in the majority of patients suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy significantly relieves neuropathic pain in the area of the carpal tunnel. Pulsed magnetic therapy therefore represents an appropriate non-pharmacological alternative.
